1983 – From Garage to Warehouse
In the Summer of 1983, after running out of space printing t-shirts in their garage, four brothers and their father registered for a business license and leased a tiny warehouse in bustling Virginia Beach, VA. Island Designs Screen Printing Co. was officially born.
The Early Days
In the early days, it was a true family operation with an unconventional rhythm. Mornings were spent soliciting and organizing custom T-shirt orders, but production had to wait until the afternoon when the youngest brothers got out of class. Printing would begin after school, and by early evening, their dad would report in after a full day serving as a U.S. Navy dentist at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. As he arrived, the older brothers would head out to wait tables at the beach, while long nights in the shop carried on alongside their dad.
Scaling up the 1990s
As demand grew, so did their offerings – adding embroidery, apparel like polos and hats, and expanding into additional workspace.
By 1990, customers were requesting novelty items such as custom printed Zippo lighters and logo’d pool noodles. Not wanting to turn down an opportunity, a new business segment was added – the Sourcing of Quality Promotional Products – which allowed them to meet the unusual demands of a widening customer base.
